Responding to the urgent need to tackle today’s pressing legal, institutional, and ethical issues in biomedical science, the Ewha Institute for Biomedical Law and Ethics was founded in 2005 at Ewha Law School. Designated as a bioethics and policy center by the Korea Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2006, the institute has focused on studying law and legislature in bioethics and promoting legal scholarship in this field. The center changed its name to the Ewha Institute for Biomedical Law and Ethics (EIBLE) in 2007, with the purpose of expanding the area of studies into health law and health policy, as well as playing a crucial role in the field by encouraging practical, substantial research. So far, the institute has dedicated itself not only to establishing related laws and policies and demonstrating leadership in academia, but also invigorating social discussions among academics, practitioners, and policymakers in health law, health policy, food and drug regulation, science and technology policy, and bioethics.

Ewha Womans University boasts the largest offering of health law and bioethics courses in Korea, thanks to the EIBLE faculty members’ collective expertise in teaching and research, which can be seen through Ewha’s degree programs, non-degree research programs, and various mentorship and writing opportunities for Ewha students (*student bioethics blog: www.eible.org and *Ewha Health Law Advisors: www.ewhahla.org). |
■ Translations and Publications |
Being the sole Korean journal focusing on both health law and bioethics, the Asia Pacific Journal of Health Law & Ethics (for submission, visit www.eible-journal.org) is poised to reach out to global readership and authorship. The journal is indexed in the renowned international databases of EBSCOhost, Hein Online, and Westlaw Asia. Additionally, the institute has translated and published Principles of Biomedical Ethics, the classic guideline for studying bioethics, and has considerably helped shape the topography of bioethics discourse in Korea by publishing and translating numerous books. Vision of EIBLE
With the vision to reach out to the world as the top tier health law and bioethics think tank in Asia, EIBLE is one of the few institutes that brings together interdisciplinary scholarship and pioneering fieldwork in the increasingly critical study of bioethics and health law, in a country with growing presence on the global stage. For example, to illustrate its ability to network with other renowned research institutes, EIBLE has signed an MOU with the O’Neil Institute for National and Global Health Law in Georgetown University (2015.10), and the Center for Medical Law in Georg-August-Universität, Germany (2014.6).

Non-degree Programs in 2018
The Ewha Institute for Biomedical Law & Ethics also runs a non-degree research program that trains professionals and policymakers on the latest themes in the field of biomedical law, health policy and bioethics.
Facing the controversial situation created by the clash between the exponential development of medical technology and Personal Information Protection Act, the ninth professional course titled “Personal Information Protection Act in Healthcare” will be held in spring, 2018.
